2019 Year in Review

We, at the theater
January we were full of optimism... but then the Live version of RENT aired on teevee. Rather than let that early disappointment color our perception of the year to come...we decided that 2019 had nowhere to go but up!

February was a month of contrasts. We Hewesies were again full of joy and anticipation as we partied down for 3 near-consecutive snow days, and saw our new favorite band Katie Bowers perform at the Cat's Eye. But all this light and fun was followed by the grim news that we should take better care of our teeth. Future dental appointments were made.

In March, we huddled indoors to wait out the cold, quietly eating and binge drinking--as you do in winter. The month's biggest triumph was the jazzy woodwind recital, headlined by the hero of this year-end update. He played to a houseful of music lovers, and had hummus afterwards. The less said about the flat tire that crippled our ZipCar as we left the Pikesville locale, the better.

Spring garden
April was the best month. We hopped in a car and drove for endless hours, to much colder climes, braving mud, sleet, and a semi-sedated dog...to get to Saranac Lake (by way of Marathon), New York. Gigi and Pete were the perfect hosts, and we got to make some art too! It's not our usual spring break, but we LOVED it. Ask us about the Sound Bath anytime.

May may have been our first real spring season in several years. It was brisk, it was rainy, it was wonderful growing weather. We got our lazy asses outside and worked in our backyard garden.

June...little can be said about this month, except that we found a new spot for unemployed teachers to drink and play trivia.

watercolor: our house
In July, the birthday month! We summarily ignored Simone's birthday and instead spent our leisure time doing good deeds. It's much more fulfilling to house the temporarily homeless, pick up middle-aged women from outpatient surgery, make Baltimore cleaner and greener, and support local art and music. Yes, we were very selfless in July (patting selves on back, smugly).

*we also spent time with the family in Antigua for a 1st family reunion

Plant on a plane
August; we hopped a plane, armed with kisses and a cutting from Big Gs plant, to celebrate the engagement of the nephew, Casey (more than a few people thought we were just bee-essing about flying out for the weekend to take part in this celebration...we were not!). That bit was excellent. Seeing aunt Gayle and Uncle Henry was excellent. Hitting the Redmond Thrift Stores for an afternoon of shopping was sublime. One of us still wakes up from warm and emotional dreams of the Redmond Value Village.

In September, school stated again, and we were back to normal. One of us began painting, after a years-long respite, and has rendered our house beautifully in water color. This was another real fall...with ramping cold temps...beautiful.

Lauren, Casey, Henry, and Gayle

October, London's calling out to Simone, so we dug deep to pay for a short January trip. Out of nowhere, a rift arose in our relationship--don't' worry it's mended now. But on the Ides of October, for no godly reason at all, Hewesie bought canned succotash. To eat. Canned. Succotash. Let's just leave it there.

Adult sippy cup?!
November is when we saw the play Thoughts of a Colored Man. We laughed, we cried, we got as close as you can get to empathy. This play is the most important thing that has happened to us all year. On a related note, since when did Center Stage start doling out the wine in embarrassingly plastic adult sippy cups?

Robotics students make a portrait, Crown Chakra singing bowl, A Chorus Line, a clarinet

December,
we had our first book club, our Robotics team ends the year kicking butt, we held our first Sound Bath in the bonus house, marked out Rob's band's first gig on the 2020 calendar, cried our eyes out seeing the Musical A Chorus Line, and we made sure to tip the mailman...hope you did too.

Much love, us.
