5 Days in LA: Day 1

Oh holy night! 5 or so day in Los Angeles,  and I'm on the final day. Earlier today I saw the 'Hollywood' sign from the Observatory at the top of Griffith park--a sight I didn't realize I wanted to see, until I did. Pretty darn cool.
To be fair we didn't see much more than varying views of downtown LA for most of this trip, as me and my colleague are in town solely for the purpose of presenting at the annual conference of our professional association. Our topic was selected from over 4000 submissions. Last autumn, an were were one of the 300 chosen to share an education session. Also, pretty darn cool.

Let me start by saying that downtown LA is not representative of the whole city, so any critical comments I make hereafter must be taken with a grain or two of pink Himalayan salt.

DAY 1: SYR to DFW to LAX
There are no direct flights from Syracuse to Los Angeles, much less Ithaca to LA. So I flw to Dallas Fort Worth. The layover allowed me to ride the sky train from my arrival terminal, to departure; a good mile or 2 away. Pretty darn cool. The DFW airport, pales by comparison to its tram line. It's shabby.
From Dallas, I flew to LAX, 2.5 hours, and I found my spirit airport. It's huge and beautiful (like some of my favorite things). So I walked from my terminal to Suzanne's.  No tram stops here. People in LA are so deprived of walking in their city that they relish a couple-few miles jaunt across the airport.
We found eachother and were off to the Westin Bonaventure a mile from the convention center. There we found food and drink in town. A relatively cool start to the trip. Especially as ithaca weather was forecast to be in the 90s this week.

In town we walked to the convention center, to gauge distance then dined at the Lazy Dog. I had the best fish and chips I've had in the USA all year.
