Ithaca, specifically. After returning from England in January, I applied to several jobs in my professional field—outside of academia. From the 7 applications, I removed myself from the running for two, was not contacted for interview for two, and interviewed and received job offers for three. All three seemed professionally challenging, financially rewarding, and viable stepping-stones to my move to international work—in a few years.
After one fairly successful second interview, the director at a university department of Environmental Health and Safety made the trip from NY to have coffee with me in an adorable Columbia, MD cafe/bistro to discuss the role and offer. In turn I stalled my decision by offering to visit their campus and work with/meet the team before officially accepting the gig. A week forward in time, I was sitting in the NY asking most of the 50 team members what success looks like for their training and development, 2-3 years into the future. I left the office beaming with joy, pride, anticipation, and certainty that this was the job for me. Back at the farm, I giggled as I retold the events of the day to our farm family, and made plans to move to the Northland Sheep Dairy in early April. That night I texted the director at the uni. and cheerfully announced that I’d quickly sign the offer letter and begin the background checks.
Collage of me in photos of various friends..three of these folks I've known longer than most
A few days later—back at home—life happened, and I have been too busy to tell all friends individually about the impending move—which happens in less than a week. However, I have been making individual dinner and drinks dates with as many friends as possible, to tell/warn them of the move, and plan one final night out this week -as a catch-all.
Packing (some of) my Stuff
I told my best friends first, and got sad and excited responses from them both. I also stole a large suitcase from one, thinking it’ll be enough to fit my spring summer wardrobe…wrong! After emptying the closet and rolling all 28 of my dresses, it was shocking to find that’s all that fits in the big suitcase. My tees, cardigans, pants, skirts, socks, and undercrackers al need somewhere to go too.
Bringing my sound bath setup, with includes about 30 Tibetan and crystal singing bowls, symbals, chimes, ocean drums, rain sticks, yoga mats, blankets, pillows, eye masks, and stands!
In addition, I must bring my art supplies, singing bowls, and toiletries (these include two electric toothbrushes and a waterpik, plus all of my unguents and oils!). Not a lot is coming, as I’ll be living on the farm for the first month or so, while I work and search for an apartment.
