...the coyotes are hungry. I shouldn’t joke, as being confronted by a wild dog can be quite scary. Anyway, I arrived to work on the second day of the semester to an email box filled with messages. One of which was that a coyote (a wild dog, kin to the wolf) was in Cascadilla Gorge biting people. Turns out that it was not rabid, just perturbed.
The Cascadilla Gorge trail has been closed all season long, due to construction. It is bucolic, beautiful, and picturesque (thanks Thesaurus!). With no human foot traffic, wildlife rends to restake a claim on the land...this is what leads to student surprises each year.
The trail and waterfall lead from my neighborhood, up over 500 feet, to my office—over the course of a mile and a half. It was one of the better commutes to get to my office. Anyway, because it’s been closed, I’ve had to commute to work on the roads of our town, like a peasant! The upside is that peasants don’t get bitten by wild dogs.
