Pink Grapefruit is Awesome

We’re going into the colder months, and it’s important to keep the immune system working at peak efficiency. In addition to eating a balanced diet, I throw some tasty super foods into the mix.

I’m talking about fresh and frozen berries, walnuts, red and orange veggies, and every now-and-again a couple spoons full of yogurt. My favorite colder season addition is fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice.

Pink Grapefruit and it's juice are excellent sources of vitamin C, and helps to support the immune system. Foods rich in Vitamin C, like grapefruit, may help reduce cold symptoms or severity of cold symptoms…" scientific studies have suggested that vitamin C is a cold-fighter."

1 Cup of juice (no pulp)
Vitamin C also prevents the free radical damage that triggers the 'inflammatory cascade', and is therefore also associated with reduced severity of inflammatory conditions, such as asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. As free radicals can oxidize cholesterol and lead to plaques that may rupture causing heart attacks or stroke, vitamin C is beneficial to promoting cardiovascular health...

...it is not surprising that research has shown that consumption of vegetables and fruits high in this nutrient is associated with a reduced risk of death from all causes including heart disease, stroke and cancer.

In addition to C, grapefruit is also high in Lycopene and antioxidants, lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol, and ay prevent growth of cancerous cells. Awesome.
